A WORKBOOK?
The workbook is known as ANOTHER PIECE OF SALTWATER TAFFY and designed to spark enthusiasm in the minds of middle school students. As the author of Saltwater Taffy and motivator of young minds, it is my job to remind children that life is an adventure to be lived FULL OUT. Always.
Let us be clear, I am not talking about an adventure to become ‘famous’ or the mis-adventures of becoming the next American Idol who only dreams of Dancing With The Stars. The adventure I am referring to is our ability to recognize the messages coming from one’s own heart.
While Saltwater Taffy is an adventure novel, I felt the need to add in a bonus ‘non-fiction’ chapter. This bonus chapter is an open letter to my readers…affectionately known as TAFFY HEADS. In this chapter I referred to this thing called the Heart Compass. The Heart Compass is a feeling inside of everyone that guides us towards the things we love.
Now, imagine a world if where more people loved what they did for a living. Seriously, how good can a ‘good paying job’ actually be if you hate doing it day after day? When you continue to do something you hate, that something is not only an example of wasting time, but an example of a wasted life. I refuse to allow my readers to waste their lives by simply fitting in with the crowd.
The problem facing our educational system is that we, the voters, continue to allow budget cuts for sports, music and the arts. Imagine if Americans got together and said: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I love the focus on math and science, but shouldn’t we teach our children how to ‘be creative?’ Shouldn’t we teach children to celebrate their differences and stop the mental struggles of trying to ‘fit in’ in the elusive ‘in crowd?’
ANOTHER PIECE OF SALTWATER celebrates and cultivates the creative mind, because I believe that every moment in life is another adventure waiting to happen. Why not embark on that adventure and turn our dreams into our realities? I have spent my entire life doing just that an here is the contents of Another Piece of Saltwater Taffy; A Guide to Getting What You Want.

I am a special education teacher in New Orleans. I read Saltwater Taffy, while at the beach this summer, I loved it and plan on reading it to my class this fall. I teach 12 to 15 year old students with various learning/developmental challenges at St. Michael Special School. Every day when we come in from our after lunch recess I read aloud to my class (12 or so students). I have been doing this for almost ten years, the post recess reading is an almost sacred time to my class, the students have to LISTEN, that’s all , no drawing, no looking at other books just listening (a skill very underrated by the education community). In the past we (I do the actual reading) have read some of the Harry Potter books, some short stories, some mythology – anyhow I think everyone in the class will enjoy Saltwater Taffy, especially with its New Orleans connection. How do I get the workbook, ‘Another Piece of Saltwater Taffy” ? Thanks, I enjoyed your website, well done.
Hey Barbara! Your class sounds awesome! I agree…LISTENING is an undervalued skill in schools. I was recently in front of 450 kids for an assembly and talked about that very skill. The principal was amazed because by the end of the assembly, talking about life, reading to the kids, the room was nearly silent. The Workbook is available in the SAWEET STORE link above! I was in NOLA twice last semester with school visits out in the Garden District. If I come back, we should schedule a visit! Thank you for your support of Saltwater Taffy. I am busy writing the script and can’t wait to shoot the MOVIE!!!! Best, Uncle E
