“Eric DelaBarre’s visit to High Point Academy with his book, Saltwater Taffy was inspirational and entertaining to the students, teachers and parents in attendance. Probably most important, delivered with his unique upbeat spirit, was that he challenged the children to think about their lives and appreciate their own individuality. Highly recommended for 3rd – 6th graders!”
“It was truly a delight to have Eric DelaBarra visit Carlthorp School with Saltwater Taffy. He provided our students with an entertaining program that not only captured the interest of the children but also taught valuable life lessons. Thank you for a worthwhile and fun experience, Eric!”
The most important element to an author visit is the preparation. We help spread the word with pre-sales flyers, posters, bookmarks and other swag elements, but it really comes down to the school or group.
Share the Saltwater Taffy website with your students and their parents so they can learn about the author and perhaps, prepare questions in advance. Teachers might also want to integrate ideas from the author visit into future classroom lessons. If this sounds like something for you, send us an email and we’ll send you some exciting treasure hunting tips.
An author visit is often more meaningful to a student if he or she can take a book home afterwards, so make books available whenever possible. Your local bookstore is always interested in handling these orders, but planning is essential so books can arrive in time for the visit. A signed copy of a book is special thing to a young reader. Please let the bookstore know that Saltwater Taffy is in worldwide distribution with Perseus Distribution.
DURING THE VISIT:
Please make sure your visiting author is not in the position of disciplinarian.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What can we expect on a school visit?
My visits are flexible, but plan on my visit lasting a full hour. While afternoon visits are cool, I find a ‘before lunch’ visit is best because the “food coma” isn’t working against us. The program includes a short reading, giveaways, prizes, signed books, and a little discussion about life and how to get the most out of it.
What age group is your program right for?
The target audience for Saltwater Taffy is best suited for kids in 3rd grade through 7th grade.
Will you travel for school visits?
Yes! I love to meet students all over the country.
Do you do Skype sessions?
Yes. I love to do Skype Author visits, so please don’t hesitate to ask for this option. This can be great for schools that cannot afford to bring me in for an in-person visit, or for schools who are in a far, far away land. All you need is your own Skype Account here. Once we decide on a date, your students or book club should have questions ready! To set up, email Riley; seven AT sevenpublishing DOT com.
What are your rates and availability?
A typical author visit can run anywhere from $1000 – $3000 per hour, but here at the Saltwater Taffy Network, we understand budget constraints for schools in today’s economic climate.
For this reason, our author visits are FREE. Yes…they are FREE for Southern California Public Schools. If you’re outside of the So Cal area, however…the visit is still FREE. Yes, it’s FREE…but your PTA needs to cover reasonable travel expenses. To limit these costs, host families or arrangements are always accepted. Simply put, we are here for your students, so let’s make it happen.
