Parents, you hold the key! Although merely an adventure novel for tweens, Saltwater Taffy has the potential to change the life of your child. As nice as that sounds, the transformation cannot occur without YOU, because you hold the key. You MUST set an example and pick up a book. If you don’t read, how can you expect your child to?
When I was President of the BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Council of Santa Monica, I realized how important our teachers are to the performance of our children. Going beyond that, I began to wonder who was more important than the teacher? That’s right. The parent.
I WANT YOU TO BE PART OF THIS JOURNEY
Don’t panic. I’m not asking you to dilute your already hectic schedule or anything of that nature. All I am asking you to do is to read the award-winning adventure novel Saltwater Taffy with your child. Find a time that works for both of your schedules. Bedtime story time would be my first suggestion, but whatever works for you is fine. When you read with your child, you not only create the habit of reading, you create a friendship.
MAKE MEMORIES NOW!
By reading the Saltwater Taffy novel together, you create memories that can last a lifetime. In a few short years, your kid…your baby…your little pumpkin head ragamuffin will be in college. Sounds crazy, but their teenage years are RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.
Do you remember what it was like to be a teenager? You want your independence and you want it NOW! What you don’t want is to hang out with your parents. You want to hang out with your friends. You want to stay out late and watch R-rated movies. Here’s why.
‘I’M NOT A KID ANYMORE’
Ask your parents if you ever said this to them during your teenage years. Sad to say, but this is normal behavior for teens — their desire to be older. If you think your friendship will blossom when your kid is a teenager, think again. Parents are last on the dance card when it comes to a teenagers life.
Some people have asked why I am so worried about our children. First of all, I’m not worried. The activity of worry is like paying interest on a debt not yet due. I want to make sure your kid doesn’t make the same stupid mistakes that we made growing up. I’m not talking about the stupid mistakes like throwing rocks or stealing something from the local 7-11. I’m talking about the biggest mistakes of all — THE MISTAKES WITHIN OUR OWN MINDS.
‘I’m not good enough.’
‘I’m not deserving enough.’
‘I’ll never be able to do that.’
‘I’m not smart enough.’
These examples of BAD HABIT thinking have a way of sticking around for years. They are mental mis-takes and have a negative residual effect on who we become later on in life. These bad habits have the ability to WASTE a lifetime. They keep us from being happy in the right NOW-ness of our lives.
WHAT HAPPENS LATER?
We learn that it is okay to become imprisoned within our own minds. This is the biggest crime in life, thinking you are less than. Years go by and we begin to believe that our happiness is some far off place, a future event, a trip, a new car, or a new job. Happiness suddenly becomes something other than our own THOUGHTS of…
People have become so afraid of their own thoughts, they never really take a chance in life. To me, that’s a crime! Let’s not have the same crime happen in the minds of our children. Let’s create habits that will enhance the lives of our children.
This book, the workbook, the audio podcast, the essay contests, the treasure hunts…this entire SALTWATER TAFFY mission is about helping kids. I want to help them develop a mental toolbox that allows them to discover what it means to be HAPPY WITH WHO THEY ARE. A confidence that helps a child hold onto their dreams and never let go!
